KEY FINDINGS
1
AI PATENTING IN BANKING IS ACCELERATING, BUT LEADERSHIP REMAINS CONCENTRATED
The number of patents filed by major banks grew at 78% CAGR over the last decade. However, 3 banks account for 75% of all patents: Capital One, Bank of America, and JPMorgan Chase.

2
PATENTS REFLECT GROWING INTEREST IN GEN-AI WITHIN BANKS' WIDER INNOVATION APPROACH
Most patents focus on Traditional AI, but the share of GenAI patents increased from 6% to 17% in 2023. This growing focus on GEAI is also reflected in Evident's Use Case Tracker, where more than half of all new AI use cases disclosed by banks since 2024 have leveraged GenAI.

3
CUSTOMER SERVICE, CYBER AND BACK OFFICE ARE MOST COMMON AREAS FOR GEN AI PATENTS
Evident analysis of GenAI related patents by the banking sector found customer service is the top focus area, reflecting bank investments into customer-facing chatbots and customer analytics. Cybersecurity and back office functions are also areas where bank GenAI patenting is more common. Conversely there are fewer GenAI patents from banks relating to training or financial risk management.
