STRONG AI PATENTING GROWTH, BUT LEVELS DOWN FROM 2020 PEAK
Patent activity by major insurers grew at 21% CAGR since 2014, but it is down 30% from its 2020 peak. Insurers notably lag banks in AI patents, as Capital One holds 2.5x more AI patents than the top 3 insurers combined.

MOST PATENTS FOCUS ON TRADITIONAL AI, BUT GROWING SHARE IN GENAI
Most insurance AI patents focus on Traditional AI, but the share of GenAI patents increased from 4% to 31% in 2023. This uplift is driven by a small group of six insurers.

AI PATENT ACTIVITY HIGHLY FOCUSED ON CLAIMS AND UNDERWRITING
Evident analysis of AI patent filings by insurers suggest a targeted approach, concentrated on critical processes. The sector filed over 300 AI patents relating to claims and underwriting, twice the volume of the next most common focus areas, customer service, risk modelling and pricing.
